Adapting To Change

Amazon has recently made a significant change to their KDP printing costs, which will affect our royalties substantially. This change is set to be effective from Tuesday 20th June.

I have spoken with many of my subscribers regarding their mixed feelings about these changes.

These printing cost changes have been a stark reminder of the need for adaptability in business and life. It's undeniable that these changes will affect my royalties in the short term, particularly for my lower-priced and larger books.

However, it's important to remember that you can't control these industry changes. All you can control is your reaction to them.

Instead of worrying, I'm choosing to adapt.

My plan is to manually update my list prices. This will allow me to be in control of which books I choose to continue to offer. I also plan to start with my best-selling books that have good reviews and gradually increase the price by a dollar, monitoring their performance closely.

Moreover, I aim to focus on creating higher-quality books, rather than competing for one or two-dollar royalties. I want to be prepared for whatever inflation might bring in the coming years, so I'm aiming to work in mid and high-content niches that can command higher prices for my books.

Lastly, it's crucial to diversify. Don't put all your eggs in one basket with Amazon KDP. The saying goes, "diversification is the best form of protection." By spreading my efforts across various platforms and income streams, I reduce my reliance on any single source of income. I'm fortunate to have other online income streams, and in the face of these pricing changes, I'd recommend exploring other platforms and income streams as well.

We are all in this together as self-publishers and while the KDP printing cost changes are a significant short-term challenge, I believe that by adapting your strategies to higher quality books and diversifying your income streams, you can not only survive but also thrive in the long term.

Niche Of The Week: Fact Books

The niche we will be looking at is Fact books. These are a type of non-fiction book that presents interesting and informative facts about a particular topic. They can cover a wide range of subjects, from general knowledge to science, nature, history, and more.

Over December and Q1, 2 fact books have made me nearly $300. They sell really well during the Q4 period and provide me with small consistent sales during over the year.

Below you will see an example of one of these types of books.

You can see that this book has 506 reviews with an impressive 4.5 stars rating and not everyone that buys a book leaves a review, actually only a very small percentage tend to leave a review. This means this book could be selling hundreds of copies each month. However, to get a rough estimate of the sales this book is making with can take a look at it’s bsr (best sellers rank).

The Best Sellers Rank (BSR) on Amazon is a numeric ranking system that measures the popularity and sales of products in various categories on the Amazon platform. The ranking is calculated using the number of sales, downloads, or page views over a certain period of time. The lower the BSR number, the higher the product’s sales rank and popularity within its category. This book has a very impressive BSR of 24219.

You can use a BSR calculator to estimate the sales this book is making. Always take this number with a pinch of salt and use it as a rough estimate as BSR’s can fluctuate hourly and one sale can lower your books BSR significantly.

This book is roughly making 177 sales each month. Now although this book is listed at $6.99, you will not earn this full amount when you make a sale, you will earn a royalty each time you make a sale and we can use Amazon KDP’s royalty calculator to figure this out.

The estimated royalty for this book is $2.04 and if we multiply this the number we had in the BSR calculator of 177 sales each month then thus book is making $361.08 a month. If you create 3 or more of these types of books you can potentially be earning over $1000 dollars a month.

Book Creation

Now we know how much fact books can make, how do we create them? We first need to think about how many facts we want to have in our book and then start collecting the facts.

Make sure you have a look through the fact books on Amazon to get some ideas and think about ways to make your book stand out such as an attractive cover, a huge amount of facts or running ads.

I would strongly discourage you from creating around topics related to sports teams, public figures, films and movies. You do not want to lose your Amazon KDP account due to trademark or copyright issues so please avoid these topics. Use a trademark checker online to ensure your idea is safe.

I would suggest creating your facts around a topic you have a knowledge in as you will enjoy the fact-collecting process more and you will be more likely to ensure all the information you provide is correct.

The cheapest options would be to collect all the facts yourself or use an AI tool such as ChatGPT. The other option is to use freelance websites like Fiverr or Upwork and find a freelancer to collect facts for you.

Once you have collected all the facts, you can put your book together using a tool such as Canva or Book Bolt and to find the dimensions you need, you can use the Amazon KDP cover template creator. Make sure you create an attractive cover. The books I have created have been size 6"x9" and around 90 pages.

When you have designed your cover and interior make sure you download both files as a PDF.

AI TOOL OF THE WEEK- Content At Scale

While AI-generated content can be incredibly helpful, I’ve used it in my KDP books. It’s important to ensure that your work maintains a human touch and avoid plagiarism if their AI uses phrases from other sources. Thankfully, there are tools to assist with these issues, one of which is ContentAtScale.ai.

When I first discovered ContentAtScale.ai, I was looking for a way to gauge how much of a text might be perceived as AI-generated. The website is straightforward to use: you copy and paste your text into the provided field, then click 'Check for AI Content.' The process takes just a few moments, and the results are impressively detailed.

On the left-hand side, you'll see a score estimating how likely the text appears to be human-generated. In my experience, an 81 score was presented. This figure suggests that the content seems fairly humanlike, but there's room for improvement. What I particularly appreciate about ContentAtScale.ai is its feature on the right-hand side, which highlights sections that may appear to be AI-generated. This interactive feedback gives you the opportunity to tweak these portions and enhance the humanlike quality of your content.

After making adjustments based on the site's feedback, you can paste the revised text back into the website to reassess your score. A higher score indicates a more humanlike composition, which can be a satisfying achievement.

Along with checking AI-related issues, it's crucial to ensure your content isn't plagiarized. I found Grammarly's free plagiarism checker to be a valuable resource. Not only does it scan your text for potential plagiarism, but it also reviews your grammar, spelling, punctuation, conciseness, readability, and other writing-related issues. Having such a thorough, easy-to-use tool at your disposal can significantly enhance the quality of your work and give you peace of mind about its originality.

So, whether you're working on a complex novel, children's picture book or you just need a story outline, these tools can aid you in producing high-quality, original, humanlike content.

As technology continues to evolve, we can utilize the best resources available to maintain authenticity and integrity in our writing. ContentAtScale.ai and Grammarly are two fantastic free resources that I've found to be highly beneficial in my own writing journey.
