This week I had the pleasure to interview Adam Young and discuss his recent foray into the Amazon Influencer Program — a program which he describes as the "best side hustle" he's undertaken in over 7 years.

Adam has been a part of the Amazon ecosystem for several years, through ventures such as Amazon FBA and Merch On Demand which he has also achieved huge success with.

In our candid conversation, he sheds light on the intricacies of the program, his strategies, the rewards, and the challenges. Adam's insights are sure to provide valuable perspective. Dive into our detailed chat below!

1. Can you share how you started your journey on the Amazon Influencer Program? What does this program involve?

I've been selling on Amazon since 2016 (First with Amazon FBA, then Merch On Demand, KDP etc). So I heard about the Amazon Influencer program through online networks and chatter, but never gave it much thought since I wasn't an 'influencer'.

I decided to apply with a Tik-Tok account I recently started and got approved right away. After that, I watched as many videos as I could and realized the potential of the program. Basically, the Amazon Influencer program is part of the broader Amazon associates program. However, instead of having to drive your own traffic, you can unlock 'on-site video placement' which means you upload product videos directly onto the Amazon site and product pages.

If a customer watches your video and buys the product, you get a commission. Have you ever seen that little video icon at the bottom left of product pages? Those are videos from Amazon Influencers. You can also create your own virtual storefront, where you can curate lists and recommend products, and upload photos and videos to your audience.

2. You've described this as the best side hustle you have done in 7+ years of trying, what makes Amazon's Influencer Program so different?

The unique feature of this program is the on-site video placement. Amazon is the biggest shopping platform on the planet, and they get millions of visitors every single day ready to spend money.

With the influencer program, I don't need to bring the traffic...I can instead create short 1-3 minute videos on Amazon products and upload them directly to product pages. For example, the wireless keyboard I am typing on right now, I purchased from Amazon. I filmed a short 90-second video, showing the keyboard; the buttons, the backlighting and talked about the battery life.

Thats it! I upload the video and tag the product ASIN. The traffic is already on the site, they are shopping and browsing. My short video provides them value (demo, instruction, unboxing, etc) and if they watch and buy, I get a commission. Amazon has immense trust with its customers, so if you can get a video directly on their page, you stand a great chance at landing conversions and making money.

3. You made over $10K from this program in just 5 months, what factors do you attribute your success to?

With the on-site videos, there is no limit on how many videos you can review and upload. For the first 30 days, I reviewed as many videos as possible....I think I did around 230 videos in 4 weeks. That's filming, uploading, writing the titles, tagging the product, etc.

I did review videos on my pots and pans, tools, electronics, and everyday household items. Granted, these are short videos (usually just in one take, no editing) but I still did as much as I possibly could. That first month I made over $1,000 and that was all the proof I needed. Since then,

I've been making videos every week and continue to grow. More videos = More clicks = More commissions. That is to say, you cannot sacrifice quality and you must adhere to the rules of the program.

4. Can anyone apply to the Amazon Influencer Program? If not, what would you recommend to increase their chances of getting accepted?

Yes, anyone can apply, but the application process requires you to submit a social media account: Youtube, Facebook, Instagram or Tik-Tok. I don't know exactly what metrics they look for in order to be approved, but most people suspect a good following and high engagement is needed. Don't get discouraged though, you don't need a million followers.

I know people who have been approved with only 100-200 followers. If your account is unique (not filled with bots and spam) and offers high engagement and value, give it a try! And if you don't get approved, focus on building up that social media account with more authentic followers/likes/comments and try again!

Once your approved you can build an Amazon storefront and share it with your audience (for example, if you have a big following). But, most people are taking advantage of the 'on site video placement' where your creating short videos for placement on the amazon product pages. That is where the real volume and potential is (unless of course, you have millions of followers).

5. What has been your content strategy for promoting Amazon products? Do you follow a particular theme or niche, or do you promote a broad range of products?

I promote a broad range of products. Basically, everything I can get my hands on. I try and study each product, and learn about it, so I can provide value in my video.

Most times it's showing the product, explaining how it works, and demonstrating the size/features. I put myself in the viewer's shoes (what would I want to know if I was interested in this product?). However, I'm also trying to carve out a niche, or specialty area too.

6. What challenges did you face in your journey with the Amazon Influencer Program, and how did you overcome them?

Well, I was fortunate, I got approved right away. After that, the challenge is finding products to review. I started with items I already own (I am a big Amazon shopper), and quickly expanded to review products my friends and family owned.

I've done product research and purchased items for reviews and now I have companies reaching out to me to review products for them, in many cases getting paid an extra fee for the video (as well as the possible commission down the road).

7. What are the top three pieces of advice you'd offer to someone looking to achieve similar success within the Amazon Influencer Program?

1. Focus on (1) social media account, and build it up with authentic engagement. My recommendation is Tik-Tok.

2. Once approved, read all the rules and terms of service with the program, and submit your 3 'test videos' to unlock on-site video placement.

3. Review everything you can get your hands on, and just be yourself. Most people want an authentic video experience, not a cheesy sales pitch.

8. With the Amazon Influencer Program's increasing popularity, how do you set yourself apart from the crowd and continuously grow your income?

I think the best thing you can do to set yourself apart from the crowd, is to provide good value in your videos. Not only will this translate to higher conversion rates, but it will also get the attention of other brands who will reach out to collaborate.

Once you get the ball rolling, focus on a particular area. For example, it could be home improvement, music, or technology. This will give you a specialty, while still allowing for a very broad reach.

9. Do you have any other successful side hustles that you can recommend?

Yes, I've been selling Print on Demand (with Amazon's Merch On Demand program) since 2018. It's been a life-changing opportunity. I also do blogging (websites, affiliates, ads) and freelance writing. All of these side hustles have overlapping skill sets, which helps me leverage my time and productivity.

10. What are your future plans and goals for the Amazon Influencer Program?

Continue to create videos, upload, rinse, and repeat. A huge part of the success of this program is momentum and quantity. Results are slow to start, but once the ball is rolling it can really snowball!

    • Make Differences: Use software like Canva or Book Bolt to create subtle changes in one of the images. The number of changes and their complexity will determine the difficulty level.

  • Decide on a Theme: Themes can range from nature, historical places, to everyday scenes or fantasy landscapes. A consistent theme can make your book more attractive to a specific audience based on research.
