She Made Over $11k In One Month - Interview With Kim George

I had the privilege of interviewing Kim George, she is a successful self-published author, known for her innovative approach to low-content book publishing on Amazon KDP. Starting her journey in March 2021, Kim transformed her interest into a lucrative venture, with an impressive turnover of over $11k in December 2022.

Let's dive into her journey, success strategies, and her best advice for new authors considering self-publishing.

  1. Can you share how you started your journey as a self-published author on Amazon KDP? What motivated you to choose this platform?

I started my publishing journey in March 2021 as I was looking for ways to bring in passive income and extra money. I started looking around on YouTube for ideas and mainly looked for something that would essentially sell itself once I put the time into creating it. That’s when I discovered low content books. I’ve been loving the journey so far and have had a lot of fun creating them.

  1. You made over $11K in December 2022, Can you share what factors contributed most significantly to your success?

So this is a great question. I believe there were a few things that led to this in December:

  • I created a series of books in a competitive niche with really nice covers and a well-researched topic. This is the one area of low content book publishing that a lot of people overlook and don’t do enough of in my opinoin.

  • I invested in having someone create EPIC covers for these books. I am ok with designing low content books, but I knew that for these coloring books, I would need a really amazing design to compete so I worked with someone to design them to look completely different from everything else that is out there.

    1. How are you able to manage your time alongside, work, family, your successful youtube channel and other commitments?

To be honest with you this is something that I need to work a little bit more on because at times I feel like I am all over the place. Two things that have helped me a ton are getting up earlier and also hiring a part-time VA to help with some of the tasks that I do. I do try (ahem) to keep a task list of the top 3 things that I need to do every day. This way I don’t feel so overwhelmed and feel the need to work on a thousand different things at once.

  1. You have been publishing on Amazon KDP for a few years, what is your best advice would you give to a new author considering self-publishing?

The BEST advice that I can give to new authors wanting to get into the world of low content book publishing is to get really good at doing your own research. This is key! I work with a lot of coaching clients and other aspiring publishers on helping them with their low content book business – and by far the issue that I see coming up the most is people thinking that they “know” what people want versus doing the research to find out what people are interested in “buying”.

I often tell my students and coaching clients that just because you want to create books around things that you love or are passionate about…doesn’t mean that it's what people want. There is a fine line between the two. Your main job as a low content book publisher is to find out what people want and put those products in front of them.

  1. How do you decide what book you will create next? Do market trends on Amazon KDP influence your choices?

I decide what books I will publish based on niche research. I've worked with a lot of students and others that want to get into the world of low content book publishing that think “I have this idea. I know this is what people want” versus doing the “research” to make sure it’s what people are actually looking for.

  1. What challenges have you faced during your self-publishing journey and how have you overcome them?

Oh goodness quite a few! Believe or not, especially when I first started out there were times where I seriously wanted to give up and throw in the towel. I was publishing books left and right and wasn’t really making any sales at all. I ran ads and all kinds of stuff, just basically throwing spaghetti at the wall and nothing seemed to stick. It’s in those moments that I focused on my “why” that kept me in the game. Then once I started seeing sales come in from the books that I created, and got super excited because it showed me that this business can work.

  1. Do you have any other successful side hustles that you can recommend?

A few additional side hustles that I’m loving right now are YouTube ad revenue, affiliate marketing, online courses, coaching and selling digital products with an online shop. I use Payhip to run all of this and it is an amazing platform. I mean sheesh there are just sooo many different things that you can do with it from a side hustle perspective.

  1. What are your future plans and goals for your publishing career on Amazon KDP?

My goal right now with publishing on KDP is to continue creating books but…with a more strategic focus on building a “brand” for my books. You see, I noticed a while back that the majority of the books that I sold were all coming from specific brands of books. So going forward, I just plan to focus on adding more books to popular brands that I have available on KDP and also adding more revenue streams from those books.

  1. Where can we find you online?
