Reviewing Your KDP Books #2

This week, I'm thrilled to review Jasmine’s book, a dedicated author with a passion for bringing her ideas to life through self-publishing.

Thanks to Jasmine for allowing me the opportunity to feature her work in our newsletter. It's not easy to show your book in public and her willingness to share her experience is immensely appreciated.

Jasmine has a portfolio of 140 books and she was open about her current earnings roughly £20 per month from her books.

Despite her efforts, including running ads and enhancing her book with A+ content, Jasmine's books struggle to emerge from the depths of Amazon's search results, often landing on pages 5-6.

This issue is exemplified by one of her more recent ventures, a Blank Recipe Book, which despite its quality, faces an uphill battle in gaining traction.

Let’s take a look at this book:

The Core Problem: Niche Saturation

The root of the problem Jasmine faces lies in the niche selection.

A quick search on Amazon using the keywords in her title ‘Blank Recipe Book’ shows over 60,000 results in the US Market and 50,000 results in the UK market, an indication of the saturation within this category.

US Market

UK Market

Such fierce competition makes it exceedingly difficult for any single book to climb the ranks to the first page without large advertising funds.

Even the most compelling cover, engaging description, and premium A+ content cannot get visibility in a highly competitive niche. Most customers will only look at the first and second page and this is challenging to appear on

A Four-Step Strategy for Niche Selection

In response to this problem, I always favour a strategic approach to niche selection, encapsulated in a four-step criteria:

  1. Keyword Relevance: Ensure the keywords in your title are suggested by the Amazon search bar, indicating active searches by users.

  2. Competition Analysis: Aim for niches with fewer competing titles. Ideally, search results should not exceed 2,000 to 3,000 entries. If you're using ads, a ceiling of 5,000 is manageable.

  3. Demand Confirmation: Analyze the Best Seller Rankings (BSR) of several books within your chosen keywords. Presence of several titles with a BSR below 200,000 signifies healthy demand.

  4. Market Freshness: Verify that recent additions to the niche are also selling well by checking there BSR’s, ensuring the market isn't dominated by a single book.

The method will validate any idea you wish to create a book around and ensure that you have the potential to make sales.

Moving Forward

Adopting this strategy, I looked further into the blank recipe book suggestions and discovered a subset: "cocktail recipe blank book."

Blank Recipe Book Suggestions

Search Results For Cocktail Recipe Book Blank

This search resulted in a far less books to compete against of only 8,000 results, with several titles showing BSRs below 200,000, indicating a viable niche with less competition and tangible demand.

Books Under The Cocktail Recipe Blank Book Niche

Although the search results don’t meet the exact criteria and one book is slightly above a BSR of 200,000 this is just an example showing you what I look for.

Closing Thoughts

The main message is clear: strategic niche selection, grounded in thorough market research, is important in enhancing visibility and success with Amazon KDP.

Unfortunately in 2024 the blank recipe book niche is not a great niche to get into.

Once again, I thank Jasmine for sharing her book and I will discuss some personal suggestions further with her.
